03 July 2019

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged conflicting sides in Afghanistan to protect civilians,  his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, told the reporters.

A powerful bomb was set off on July 1 near Afghan Ministry of Defense logistics center in Kabul. According to local authorities, several attackers continued to resist the security forces after the explosion. One person was killed and 105 were injured, including 26 children and 5 women. All five of the fighters who had attacked the logistics center were killed,  the Ministry of Interior Affairs reported.

"The Secretary-General is outraged and deeply saddened by the attack that took place on the 1st of July in a civilian-populated area of Kabul", - Dujarric said.

According to the spokesman, the Secretary-General reiterates that international humanitarian law explicitly prohibits indiscriminate attacks and attacks directed against civilians, and "appeals to all parties to the conflict in Afghanistan to uphold their obligations to protect civilians".
