UN Envoy for Libya resigns

03 March 2020

UN envoy for Libya Ghassan Salame resigns, because of health reasons. The diplomat wrote about this on Twitter.

"For two years, I tried to re-unite Libyans and restrain foreign interference […] but for health reasons I can no longer continue with this level of stress",  wrote Salame.

"Therefore I asked the UN Secretary-General to relieve me of my duties", he added.

After the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, two governments operate in Libya at the same time: the internationally recognized government of National Accord in Tripoli, keaded by Faiz Sarraj, and the interim Cabinet of Abdullah Abdurrahman al-Thani, supported by Field-Marshal Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army.
