The UN is concerned about the almost daily ceasefire violations in northwestern Syria, the official representative of the Secretary-General of the Organization Stephane Dujarric.
“We are extremely concerned about the safety of four million civilians in the northwest of the country. Despite the ceasefire agreement reached on March 6 between Turkey and Russia, crossfire reports are received almost daily. Between April 30 and May 4, artillery shelling reportedly affected nine areas in Idlib, as well as one in North Aleppo and two in Hama, ”the diplomat said in particular.
The introduction of a ceasefire and a number of other measures aimed at resolving the situation in Idlib was agreed by the Presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan on March 5 in Moscow.
The agreements stipulated that hostilities in Idlib would be discontinued along the entire line of contact on March 6.
From March 15, the Russian Federation and Turkey began joint patrols along the Aleppo-Latakia (M-4) highway, along which a security corridor will be created.
On May 4, Erdogan said that Turkey "no longer intends to tolerate the increasing attacks in the security zone in Idlib, which are carried out contrary to the agreements on Syria."
