UN General Assembly Adopts Russian Resolution on Combating Neo-Nazism

18 December 2024

The United Nations General Assembly has voted in favor of a resolution proposed by Russia titled “Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance,” according to a TASS correspondent.

The resolution was supported by 119 countries, opposed by 53, and 10 abstained. Among those opposing were Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, Ukraine, and Japan. Nations such as Azerbaijan, Algeria, Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, and Serbia voted in favor.

Maria Zabolotskaya, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the resolution aims to strengthen international cooperation in combating Nazism, racism, and xenophobia. She emphasized that the modern human rights system emerged in response to the genocide and war crimes committed by the Nazis, with the Nuremberg Tribunal’s rulings cementing the outcomes of World War II. She underlined that combating Nazism and its manifestations remains a core mission of the UN, an organization founded in response to the horrors of Nazism and fascism.

For nearly two decades, Russia and a group of co-sponsors from various regions have submitted this resolution, receiving widespread support from the international community. Zabolotskaya criticized Western nations for attempting to sow division and hinder efforts to address neo-Nazism, racism, and xenophobia.

“The voting results clearly demonstrate the unwavering support of the international community and its commitment to eradicating these phenomena,” she concluded.

Co-sponsored by Belarus and Turkmenistan, the resolution consists of 74 points. It strongly condemns incidents related to the glorification and promotion of Nazism, commends efforts to preserve historical truth, and recommends measures to prevent the denial of crimes against humanity and the distortion of World War II history. The resolution also denounces the use of educational materials and rhetoric that promote racism, discrimination, hatred, and violence based on ethnicity, nationality, religion, or beliefs.
