UN Mission in Iraq Condemns Strikes on Arbat Airport

19 September 2023

The UN Mission in Iraq has strongly condemned the attack on the Arbat airport in the Iraqi province of Sulaymaniyah in the northeast of the country. This statement was issued by the organization and published on its official social media account.

"The UN Mission in Iraq condemns the attack on Arbat airport in Sulaymaniyah province, which has resulted in casualties. Such attacks that violate Iraqi sovereignty must cease. Security issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, not through acts of aggression," emphasized the organization.

On Monday, Reuters reported, citing a source in the Iraqi security forces, that an attack on the Arbat military airfield, located southeast of the provincial capital of Sulaymaniyah, resulted in at least six fatalities.

However, the Iraqi portal Shafaq News reported that at least three other individuals were injured in the attack. It's important to note that the strike targeted not a military airfield but rather the airport of an agricultural enterprise, and it was carried out by a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle). In response to reports of casualties and injuries, ten ambulances were dispatched to the scene. As of now, no organization has claimed responsibility for the incident.
