The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, has condemned Israel’s decision to cut off electricity to Gaza, calling it an act of genocide. She also accused countries that continue to supply weapons to Israel without imposing sanctions of being complicit in genocide against the Palestinian people.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Albanese emphasized that cutting Gaza’s electricity supply halts the operation of desalination plants, effectively cutting off access to clean water for residents. She further stated that the lack of sanctions against Israel and the continued flow of arms to the country directly enables genocide.
On March 9, Israeli state broadcaster Kan reported that Israel’s Energy Minister, Eli Cohen, had ordered a complete halt to electricity supplies to Gaza. Previously, Israel had provided power for a desalination plant in central Gaza, but most of the enclave's electricity comes from generators, which have been without fuel for over a week.
This latest move follows Israel’s decision on March 2 to block humanitarian aid shipments and close all border crossings after Hamas rejected a ceasefire negotiation plan proposed by US special envoy Stephen Wittkoff.
