UN: Over 1 Million in Gaza at Risk of Food Shortages

19 March

More than one million people in Gaza may be left without food aid in March unless humanitarian deliveries resume, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“Food supplies are running out fast. To cope with the shortage, UN partners are drastically reducing aid to families, suspending flour and fresh food distribution, and cutting portions at public kitchens,” OCHA stated. If the situation does not improve, “at least 80 out of 170 community kitchens will be forced to close within one to two weeks.”

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the US, took effect on January 19 but ended on March 1. On March 2, Israel blocked humanitarian aid deliveries and sealed border crossings and resumed airstrikes on March 18 after Hamas rejected a US peace proposal.
