UN: Over 340,000 Refugees Reside in Conflict Zones in Lebanon

20 November

At least 340,000 Syrian refugees are currently living in regions of Lebanon heavily impacted by ongoing clashes between Israel and the Shiite movement Hezbollah, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Lebanon.

Since October 2023, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has identified over 95,000 refugees displaced for a second time, with 79,000 uprooted since September 23, 2024. The OCHA report highlighted that these 340,000 refugees are concentrated in areas most affected by hostilities.

On September 23, Israel launched "Operation Northern Arrows" against Hezbollah's military infrastructure in Lebanon, intensifying its airstrikes. During one such attack on September 27 in Beirut, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed. The organization confirmed his death and vowed to continue resisting Israel.

On the night of October 1, the Israeli military announced the start of a ground operation in southern Lebanon's border regions, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
