UN peacekeepers call for restraint after tensions on Lebanon-Israel border

25 April 2022

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Monday called for restraint after the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border escalated.

"A rocket was fired from Lebanon toward Israel early this morning. The Israel Defense Forces returned fire with dozens of shells," UNIFIL said in a statement posted on their Twitter page. "UNIFIL Head of Mission and Interim Force Commander Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz calls for calm and restraint in this volatile and ongoing situation," the peacekeepers noted.

Earlier the Qatari TV channel Al Jazeera reported that unidentified militants in southern Lebanon fired a rocket towards Israel, which exploded in the open ground and did not reach the Jewish settlements. It was also said that the Israeli military had detected the missile launch from Lebanese territory, but had not sounded an air-raid alarm. The TV channel connected the attack on the border with the escalation of violence in East Jerusalem and West Bank. In response to the rocket launch from Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces fired an artillery strike at a site in the republic.

In May 2021, militants from radical groups in the Rashidiya Palestinian refugee camp near Tyre repeatedly shelled northern Israel. Lebanese soldiers and UNIFIL peacekeepers stationed at the border detected the rocket launchers that had been firing at them, but failed to apprehend the violators of the ceasefire.
