Russia calls on the UN Secretary-General to appoint a new Special Representative for Libya as soon as possible after the resignation of Ghassan Salamé in March, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Gennady Kuzmin said at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Libya, which was held as a video conference.

Peace in Libya, he said, can only be achieved through dialogue between the Libyans themselves. “We remind that no decisions should be made from outside the country,” the diplomat emphasized.

“At the same time, it is impossible to overestimate the importance of the central role of the UN in the settlement in this country. We pay tribute to Ghassan Salame and urge the Secretary-General to appoint his Special Representative as soon as possible in the interests of the Libyan process,” Kuzmin added.

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Ghassan Salame, announced his resignation on Twitter on March 2.
