UN reiterates its call for humanitarian aid to Syria despite sanctions

22 February 2023

States must ensure that sanctions against Syria do not interfere with the humanitarian response to the earthquake in the country, UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Najat Rochdi said in Geneva.

"Taking note of the additional humanitarian exemptions announced by key donors in response to the earthquake, Deputy Special Envoy Rochdi urged donor countries to ensure that all relevant humanitarian exemptions for sanctions that could impede the humanitarian response are fully utilized," the statement read.

Earlier, the US and Britain said they removed earthquake response activities from sanctions against Syria until August. UN WFP Regional Director for the Middle East Corinne Fleischer said some sanctions against Syria should be lifted, so the humanitarian community can deliver medicine and fertilizer to the country after the earthquake.
