At least 22 people, including 12 women and 2 children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in the northern Lebanese city of Eito. This was reported by Jeremy Laurence, the spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), during a briefing in Geneva.
Laurence stated that OHCHR is “aware of reports” of civilian casualties in Eito. “We have heard that among the 22 dead are 12 women and 2 children,” he said. He emphasized that the airstrike hit a four-story residential building.
In light of the incident, Laurence expressed concerns about the adherence to international humanitarian law. The OHCHR office in Lebanon has called for a “swift and independent investigation” into the airstrike.
Israel launched Operation “Northern Arrows” on September 23 against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, targeting military facilities of the Shiite group. The stated goal of the operation is to secure Israel's northern border areas, allowing tens of thousands of residents to return. On October 1, the Israeli army announced a ground operation in southern Lebanon's border regions.
