UN Reports Largest Palestinian Displacement in the West Bank Since 1967

11 March

Israeli military operations in the West Bank have led to the largest displacement of Palestinians in the region since 1967, according to Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

"The Israeli security forces' operation in the West Bank, which began six weeks ago, has had a severe impact on the Palestinian population, particularly in the northern part of the region. Several refugee camps have been nearly emptied, forcing around 40,000 Palestinian refugees to flee their homes. This is the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967," Lazzarini stated in a message published on the UNRWA website.

He also noted an increase in activity by Palestinian armed groups in the area. According to Lazzarini, UNRWA continues to monitor population movements and provide humanitarian assistance, including medical services, food distribution, and essential supplies.

On January 21, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the launch of a "large-scale military operation" in the city of Jenin, dubbed "Iron Wall." The operation aims to "eliminate terrorism" in Jenin, a stronghold of radical Palestinian groups in the northern West Bank, and to "strengthen security" in the region.
