UN cooperation with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and regional associations is important to prevent drug, arms and terrorism trafficking in Afghanistan, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday at a Security Council meeting.
"In terms of the specific areas I want to touch on, it is cooperation in the context of Afghanistan. The humanitarian crisis in the country is getting worse every day," Guterres said. - "Terrorism remains a source of constant threat, not only to the security of Afghanistan and the region, but also to the entire world".
"Without decisive action, the economic downturn, rising unemployment and worsening humanitarian crisis will fuel extremism," the UN secretary-general said. - "The threat of drug and arms trafficking, criminal and terrorist networks is growing."
According to the secretary-general, regional and interregional cooperation is a particularly important element of the response. "Close cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, including the CSTO, will be critical in addressing these threats, ensuring stability and ultimately saving lives," Guterres stressed.
