UN Secretary-General expects closer cooperation with Turkey after Erdogan's re-election

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his victory in the Turkish presidential election on Sunday, stressing that he expects Ankara and the international community to intensify their cooperation.


"The secretary-general congratulates President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as president of the Republic of Turkey. He looks forward to further strengthening cooperation between Turkey and the United Nations," said a statement issued on behalf of Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the head of the world organization.


Turkey's Supreme Electoral Council (CEC) declared, based on preliminary results, Erdogan's victory in the second round of the presidential election. After processing 99.43% of the ballots, he gets 52.14% of the votes, while Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the opposition candidate, gets 47.86%.
