UN Secretary-General Guterres Urges Ceasefire in Gaza and Sudan During Ramadan

11 March

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Sudan, coinciding with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"In Gaza, Sudan, and beyond, this is a time for peace. I urge political, religious, and community leaders to do everything in their power to ensure this sacred period is marked by empathy, action, and peace," Guterres stated.

Furthermore, the UN Secretary-General called for the release of all hostages in the Gaza Strip and reminded that other faiths will soon be observing their religious holidays. "Let us not forget that, in addition to Ramadan, Christians will soon celebrate Easter, and Jews - Pesach," he added.

As the sun set on March 10, marking the beginning of Ramadan, Muslims around the world welcomed the holy month with prayers in mosques. For the next 30 days, they will fast from dawn to dusk. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with Uraza Bayram, which lasts for three days. In 2024, this feast will be observed on April 10.
