UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pointed to the need to achieve a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan, condemning the assassination attempt on the country's Vice-President Amrullah Saleh. This statement was made by the official representative of the administrative head of the international community, Stephane Dujarric.
"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack on the official motorcade of the first Vice-President Amrullah Saleh in Kabul today, which resulted in the death and injury of dozens of civilians," the world organization said in a statement published on its website.
It is noted that Guterres reaffirms the UN's commitment to "support the people and government of Afghanistan in this important undertaking" - to resolve the situation through diplomatic means.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday on the path of the Vice-President's motorcade in the center of Kabul. Saleh said he was not seriously injured: minor burns to his face and an arm injury. At least 10 people were killed and 15 were injured, local television reported, citing security officials. Nearby buildings were seriously damaged by the shock wave.
