UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Set to Attend Astana Talks

UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen is expected to join the upcoming international meeting on Syria within the Astana format, scheduled to take place in Astana on January 24-25.

 

Responding to a question from TASS, Aibek Smadiarov, the official representative of Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry, confirmed ongoing communication with Pedersen's secretariat and expressed the likelihood of his participation in the talks.

 

The 21st international meeting, convened based on the collective appeal of the guarantor countries (Russia, Iran, Turkey), will bring together delegations from these nations along with representatives of the Syrian government and opposition. Observers from Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, the UN, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Committee of the Red Cross are also expected to participate. The agenda encompasses discussions on the regional situation around Syria, comprehensive settlement efforts, the humanitarian situation within the country, and the mobilization of international efforts for post-conflict reconstruction.
