28 May

The UN Security Council will convene an emergency session on Tuesday, May 28, in response to the recent strike carried out by the Israel Defense Forces on the Rafah tent camp, that killed dozens of Palestinians. A diplomatic source within the Security Council disclosed this information to TASS.

The meeting will take place in closed consultations, as per the request made by Algeria. "Closed consultations are scheduled for Tuesday evening," the source confirmed.

During the night of May 27, the Israeli military targeted Rafah, where at least eight rockets struck a tent camp located in the Tell al-Sultan neighborhood, near a warehouse belonging to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The attack ignited a fire within the tent city, killing at least 40 individuals, the majority of whom were women and children, according to the latest figures reported by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.The IDF Press Service has announced the launch of an investigation by the Fact-Finding Apparatus of the IDF General Staff to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the civilian casualties.

On May 24, the UN International Court of Justice ruled in response to a lawsuit filed by South Africa, demanding that Israel cease its offensive actions in Rafah and refrain from any actions that could adversely impact the city's population. The court further instructed Israel to keep the Rafah crossing open to facilitate assistance for the Palestinian population.
