UN Security Council considers three draft resolutions on cross-border aid in Syria

07 July 2022

The UN Security Council is discussing three draft resolutions on the cross-border assistance mechanism in Syria, which expires this month. A source at the world organization told TASS on Wednesday.

According to the interlocutor of the agency, two of the documents were developed by Russia, one of them suggests extending the regime of assistance across the border by six months. The draft proposed by Ireland and Norway provides for 12 months of additional operating time of the mechanism.

The Security Council meeting on Syria is scheduled for 5 p.m. Moscow time on July 7.

On July 9, 2021, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on the extension of cross-border assistance to Syria. The document was drafted jointly by Russia, the U.S., Ireland and Norway. It extended the operation of the only crossing point "Bab al-Hawa" on the border of Syria and Turkey for 12 months on the condition that in six months the UN Secretary General would report on the work of the mechanism of cross-border assistance. Russia, however, insisted on the need to develop the delivery of aid across the contact lines inside Syria and not from other countries.
