The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote on November 19 on a draft resolution addressing the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, according to Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya. Speaking during a Security Council session on the Middle East, Nebenzya criticized the potential opposition of Western nations to the resolution.
"Tomorrow's vote, if it happens, will be a moment of truth for the Anglo-Saxon tandem in the Security Council. If they once again deny support under cynical and fabricated pretexts, it will reveal their true stance. Despite their polished rhetoric and hollow concern for the humanitarian needs of Palestinians, Washington and London openly support and encourage Israel’s punitive operation, its illegal occupation, the killing of innocent civilians, starvation, and suffering inflicted upon hostages and unlawfully detained Palestinians. History will not forget, just as it hasn’t forgotten the colonial sins of British imperialism," Nebenzya declared.
The resolution, drafted by non-permanent members of the Security Council, aims to draw attention to the dire humanitarian needs of Palestinians and to de-escalate the conflict. Nebenzya reiterated Russia's readiness to back initiatives for a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the Security Council's capacity to act decisively. This comes in contrast to the resolution passed in June, which was heavily influenced by the United States.
Nebenzya underscored that the necessary tools for addressing the crisis are available to the Security Council if its members choose to use them effectively.
