14 April 2021

Russia will hold an informal meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Friday on issues related to unsubstantiated accusations against Syria and other countries of the use of weapons of mass destruction, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, wrote on Tuesday in his Telegram channel.

"On April 16, we are holding an informal virtual meeting of the UN Security Council on the 'Arria formula' (informal discussion with the participation of civil society - TASS) on the topic of protecting developing states from political pressure under the pretext of unsubstantiated accusations of the use of weapons of mass destruction," he wrote. - "A special focus, of course, on Syria, which has been subjected to a particularly sophisticated campaign by Western states of late."

"We are very concerned about the continued politicization of the work of the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), whose reputation has been seriously damaged by the revelations of large-scale violations by its Technical Secretariat in a number of episodes on the Syrian chemical dossier," Polyanskiy added.

"A number of experts in the field of non-proliferation will act as rapporteurs, the list of which we will circulate later so that they do not face pressure from those who are not interested in rectifying the above-mentioned trends," specified the First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN.
