UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen plans to participate in an international meeting on Syria in the Astana format (Russia, Iran, Turkey), which takes place on June 20-21 in the capital of Kazakhstan. Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters.
"Traditionally, representatives of observer countries will take part [in the negotiations]. These are the Arab countries neighboring Syria - Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan. Also, our colleagues from UN structures are here, first of all Mr. Geir Pedersen, the special envoy of the UN secretary-general for Syria," Bogdanov said.
An international meeting on Syria in the Astana format is taking place June 20-21 in Astana. Delegations from guarantor countries - Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as representatives of the Syrian government and opposition are taking part in the talks. Representatives of the UN, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are expected as observers.
