The UN fully supports Russia's mediation efforts to resolve the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Assistant Secretary-General of the world organization Miroslav Jenca said on Thursday, speaking at the Security Council meeting.

"Various mediation efforts continue in the region, including those by Russia and the EU. We fully support these international efforts; they can lay the groundwork that can help the parties resume dialogue for long-term peace," he said.

The UN official said Yerevan and Baku must honor their commitments to fully implement the November 9, 2020, cease-fire statement of the leaders of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Jenca added that the UN hopes that the ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be respected. "We welcome the agreement and hope that the ceasefire will be respected," he said.

The UN representative said the escalation between Azerbaijan and Armenia underscores the urgent need for the parties to move forward on delimitation and demarcation issues within a framework of mutual recognition of territorial integrity and sovereignty.
