UNGA Adopts Resolution Demanding Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

12 December

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

According to a TASS correspondent, 158 countries voted in favor of the resolution, 9 opposed it, and 13 abstained. The resolution required a two-thirds majority for adoption. Unlike Security Council decisions, UNGA resolutions do not carry binding legal force.

The resolution, initiated by Algeria, Bangladesh, Guinea, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the State of Palestine, emphasizes the urgent need for an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire. It also calls for the release of all hostages and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid.

Additionally, the resolution highlights the protection of civilians, accountability for violations of international law, and support for the two-state solution, advocating peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.
