United Nations: Libya is on the verge of civil war

22 May 2019

Libya is on the verge of civil war, which as a result can lead to a permanent division of the country. UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame announced it, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council on Libya.

According to him, the attack of the troops of General Khalifa Haftar on Tripoli led to a large number of casualties and destruction.

“Libya is on the verge of entering a civil war that could lead to an irreversible split in the country. It will take years to correct the damage that has already been done”, the Diplomat mentioned.

It is known, after the overthrow and murder of the Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya actually ceased to function as a single state.

Now the country continues to reign dual power. The Parliament has been elected by the people sits in the east, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, the Government of National  Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union rules.
