US Department of State: US did not agree to unfreeze Iran's assets in third countries

15 April 2022

The US authorities did not agree to unfreeze Iranian assets blocked at Washington's initiative, including those in third countries, as part of any agreement to release Americans, Spokesperson for the United States Department of State Ned Price told a briefing for reporters on Thursday.

"All of our sanctions remain in place and will remain in place until we can ensure an overall return to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)," he responded to a reporter's question.

Price added in this regard that there have been "false allegations in the media about deals on detainees" as well as regarding the easing of sanctions against Iran. "Unfortunately, we don't really have any breakthroughs to announce. Any information regarding our negotiations, regarding Americans unnecessarily detained and held in Iran, would only come directly from the Department of State. Unfortunately, there are a lot of allegations that are intentionally false," the US foreign policy spokesman emphasized.

Price added that consultations with Iran are now going on "two parallel tracks." "One is the one we talked about in the context of Vienna regarding a joint return to compliance with the JCPOA. The second concerns the release of all four US citizens who are being held unjustifiably in Iran. Unfortunately, to date, none of these negotiations have been successfully concluded," the Department of State spokesman explained.

"All reports to the contrary, including reports that <...> Iranian funds blocked in accounts in third countries will be transferred, are untrue," Price stressed. - "Our partners have not transferred these blocked assets to Iran, and the United States has not authorized or approved any transfer of blocked funds to Iran."
