US hinders Kurdish organizations' dialogue with Syrian government - Russian MFA

20 June 2023

The US government by supporting certain Kurdish organizations in Syria prevents them from a dialogue with Damascus, Russian Presidential Special Representative for the Middle East and African Countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters.

"Of course, the Americans rely on and support a number of Kurdish organizations that have created a quasi-state with their own administration. This is absolutely unacceptable. This is a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Syrian state. Of course, we are in favor of solving the Kurdish problems through dialogue, but unfortunately, the Americans are not interested in that and don't allow their Kurdish allies to engage in a constructive dialogue with Damascus," Bogdanov said.

He noted that this issue will also be discussed during the talks on Syria in Astana.

An international meeting on Syria in the Astana format is taking place June 20-21 in Astana. Delegations from guarantor countries - Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as representatives of the Syrian government and opposition are taking part in the talks. Representatives of the UN, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are expected as observers.
