Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican, from the state of South Carolina) has suggested that the United States should strike Iranian facilities in response to attacks against American servicemen. This proposal was made in relation to Sunday's attack on a US military base on the Syrian-Jordanian border.
"When the [US President Joe] Biden administration advises 'not to do it,' the Iranians proceed. The Biden administration's rhetoric doesn't resonate with Iran. Its policy of containing Iran has been a colossal failure. There have been more than 100 attacks on US troops in the region. Iran has not been appeased," the lawmaker stated.
"I urge the Biden administration to strike key targets within Iran not just as retaliation for the loss of our troops, but also as a deterrent to prevent future aggression," he said. "The only thing the Iranian regime understands is force. Until they bear the cost with their infrastructure and military personnel, attacks on US troops will persist," Graham argued.
He noted that he has "long since lost confidence in Biden's national security team to contain Iran." "Strike Iran now. Strike them with all your might," the senator concluded. This is not the first time he has called on the executive branch to use weapons against the Islamic republic. Last December, Graham proposed bombing facilities in Iran for Tehran's alleged support for Yemen's Houthi rebels.
On January 28, the Central Command of the US Armed Forces reported that the UAV attack resulted in the death of three American servicemen and injuries to 25 others. CNN later updated this figure to 34 injured soldiers. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin pledged to retaliate against Iranian-backed groups "at the right time, in the right place."
Al Hadath reported that the strike hit a T-22 site, near which there is an American military camp assisting Jordan in fortifying the border. The channel is now investigating why the air defenses installed at the base in Al-Tanf failed to prevent the drone attack. According to the Iraqi Islamic Resistance movement, US facilities in Iraq and Syria have been attacked 175 times since the military escalation in the Middle East began in October 2023.
