Uzbekistan Affirms Afghanistan's Active Fight Against Drugs

29 September 2023

Ismatulla Irgashev, the Special Representative of the Uzbek President on Afghanistan, commended the proactive efforts of the Afghan government in tackling the production and distribution of narcotics.

During a meeting on Afghanistan, he emphasized, "The Afghan government has undertaken significant measures to combat the production and dissemination of narcotics. It's noteworthy that Afghan authorities have apprehended over 4,000 individuals involved in drug trafficking and production."

Irgashev further disclosed that within the past year, Afghanistan has dismantled more than 600 secret labs, both large and small, dedicated to the production of heroin and other illicit drugs. Moreover, efforts have resulted in the cessation of opium poppy cultivation on many thousands of hectares of land.

However, despite these achievements, Irgashev pointed out a concerning trend, noting that the production and distribution of synthetic drugs, particularly methamphetamine, are on the rise in Afghanistan.
