Uzbekistan Prohibits Sale of Tobacco and Alcohol to Individuals Under 21 Years of Age

25 August 2023

Uzbekistan has recently enforced a prohibition on the sale of tobacco and alcohol items to individuals below the age of 21. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev ratified this law on May 25. The introduction of this legislation is driven by the aspiration to safeguard the health of citizens, particularly those under 21, from the detrimental repercussions associated with alcohol and tobacco usage, along with their related negative societal and other impacts.

Furthermore, the law mandates the cessation of selling these products on self-service shelves within stores, from non-permanent structures, via vending machines, and through electronic commerce channels. The signed directive from the president also widens the spectrum of public locations where smoking is proscribed. Specifically, this prohibition extends to commercial and service establishments, as well as indoor premises designated for communal leisure.
