Valdai Club experts to discuss connection of religion, culture and politics in Kazan

24 November 2022

The conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club titled "Religious polyphony and national unity" will be held in Kazan on November 24. It will be attended by Russian and foreign church hierarchs, philosophers, religious scholars, sociologists, and international scientists, the club's press service said.

"In the current period when the previous historical era is over, when the world again stands at a spiritual and intellectual crossroads, the Valdai Club has decided to address the fundamental things that determine the internal order in states and form the public consciousness - the connection between religion, culture and politics," the statement said.

It is noted that the Club has already held debates on this topic in separate sessions, but now it was decided to dedicate a separate conference to this.

It is expected that the conference will be attended by more than 20 experts from 8 countries - Russia, Egypt, India, Iran, Malaysia, UAE, Serbia and Tajikistan. Some of the foreign guests at the conference include Director of the Institute for Middle East Strategic Studies in Tehran Kayhan Barzegar, and Secretary-General of the World Muslim Communities Council Muhammad Beshari. From the Russian side, the conference will be attended by Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alikber Alikberov, Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky, Metropolitan Kirill of Kazan and Tatarstan, Chairman of the Board of the Valdai International Discussion Club Development and Support Foundation Andrey Bystritsky and others.

"Not by chance Kazan was chosen as the venue for a conference on such a topic. For centuries the capital of Tatarstan has been a vivid example of close and peaceful coexistence of different religions, while being one of the most important centers of Russian Islam - this year Tatarstan marks the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria," the report says.

The opening ceremony, a plenary session and two thematic sessions devoted to political stability at the state level and international religious cooperation will be held within the framework of the conference.
