29 November 2019

Russia and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation are bound by ties of friendship and partnership, as well as commitment to the UN Charter and the principles of equality and the rule of law, says the greeting message of Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko to the participants of the V meeting of the Group of Strategic Vision "Russia – Islamic world".  The message was read by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Nikolai Zhuravlev.

The text of the message notes that the protection of national minorities, freedom of religion and language of communication are among the most important areas of state policy in Russia.

A unique model of interethnic and interfaith relations has been developed here for centuries and can serve as an example for the rest of the world.

The OIC is an important international body promoting Islamic solidarity and opposing colonialism, racism and other forms of discrimination.

Russia, as Zhuravlev noted in his speech, is ready to continue constructive cooperation with the OIC in the interests of peace, security, conflict resolution, strengthening the dialogue of civilizations and cultures. In addition, he reminded that in 2022 Russia will host the World Conference on Interreligious and Interethnic Dialogue, and invited the participants of the meeting to take part in it.

The topic of this year's meeting of the GSV is " Interfaith harmony:  the experience of Russia and member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)". The event is timed to the 50th anniversary of the Organization, as well as to the 90th anniversary of the outstanding Russian political and public figure, one of the founders of the GSV "Russia – Islamic world" - Yevgeny Primakov.
