On April 25, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Tor Wennesland discussed the situation around the Arab-Israeli conflict, in particular the escalation in the zone of occupied Palestinian territory.
"There was a detailed exchange of views on the current situation in the Arab-Israeli conflict zone with a focus on the dangerous escalation of tensions in the occupied Palestinian territory - the West Bank, East Jerusalem and around the Gaza Strip," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement published on its website on Friday.
The ministry also noted that during the meeting, the sides reaffirmed that there was no alternative to restoring the peace process on the basis of a two-state solution. "The importance and timeliness of raising the level to a ministerial regular open UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, was also noted," the Russian foreign ministry concluded.
The meeting was held within the framework of Russia's presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in New York.
