Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin held a phone conversation with Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations (UN) Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, to discuss the dire situation in the enclave. Both parties acknowledged that the scale of needs and destruction in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, "A detailed exchange of views was continued on the current humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with a focus on ensuring the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2720, which is designed to expedite the process of providing urgent assistance to the affected and needy Palestinians, including through the creation and launch of a special mechanism."
The statement further highlighted that both sides confirmed the lack of sustainable and safe access to Gaza's civilian population due to the ongoing Israeli military operation, emphasizing that the scale of needs and destruction has become catastrophic. Vershinin reiterated Russia's firm stance in favor of an early ceasefire.
The discussion also touched on possible measures and steps within the framework of UNSC Resolution 2720. The Russian diplomatic office pointed out that this resolution, along with other UNSC and General Assembly decisions adopted in response to the unprecedented escalation of violence in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone, remains largely unimplemented.
