Vershinin: Russia calls for coordination of international community's efforts in Afghanistan at G20

23 September 2021

At the G20 ministerial meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly Russia called for the normalization of the situation in Afghanistan and the coordination of the international community's approaches to solving the problems of the republic, Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin, who represented Russia at the meeting, told TASS on Wednesday.

"I spoke on behalf of Russia. We outlined our consistent approaches to the situation in Afghanistan - normalization of the situation, the need to coordinate the approaches of the international community, the need to solve humanitarian problems through coordination of the international community," he said, noting that much of the responsibility for coordination lies with the United States and other countries, whose military presence in Afghanistan has lasted for two decades.

Vershinin added that now "Afghanistan is a hot topic" and it will be discussed in all international contacts of the Russian delegation on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

After the US announced in the spring of this year that it had decided to withdraw its military forces from Afghanistan, the radical Taliban (banned in Russia) began a large-scale operation to take control of the country. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without a fight, and president Ashraf Ghani left the country. On September 6, the movement announced that it had taken control of all Afghan territory and on September 7, it announced the composition of the provisional government.
