Russia notes a growing "positive interest" in the work of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on the part of the countries of the region, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said on Wednesday at a UN Security Council meeting.
"We note an increasing positive interest in the work of the CSTO on the part of individual countries in the region, as well as individual organizations, primarily in terms of experience in countering CSTO new challenges and threats, including terrorism, related extremism, illegal migration and drug trafficking," he said.
According to Vershinin, the situation in Central Asia has been and remains a priority on the CSTO's agenda, especially taking into account the factor of Afghanistan. "The organization takes preventive measures to stop threats, which are coming from the territory of this country," he noted.
The diplomat stressed that complex exercises are regularly held, the operations on combating illegal migration and narcotics trafficking, which have already proved highly effective, are conducted, as well as a set of operational and preventive measures of anti-terrorist nature. "To effectively counter all these challenges, a dialogue has been established with key UN structures," Vershinin added.
