Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a welcome telegram to the participants of the Russian-Kyrgyz conference "Orthodoxy and Islam - religions of peace", which is taking place today in Bishkek.

The head of state stressed that the joint efforts of religious organizations contribute to the strengthening of civil peace and harmony in Islamic and Christian countries.

"Uniting the efforts of religious organizations, their constructive interaction with state and public structures are indispensable conditions for strengthening civil peace and harmony in our countries, where followers of different faiths have lived for centuries," the greeting reads.

Islam and Christianity, like other world religions, according to Putin, are based on mercy and love for one's neighbor, on justice and respect for the human person.

"It is very important to preserve our positive historical experience, to preserve and pass on to posterity a unique heritage-good tradition of friendship, mutual respect and understanding between people who profess different religions," the Russian leader stressed.

Religious leaders of Russia and Central Asian countries, as well as representatives, ambassadors, heads of religious organizations of the two countries, employees of international organizations and well-known experts take part in the conference in Bishkek. The aim of the conference is to create a common platform for cooperation.
