Libya hopes for the return of the Russian Ambassador to the country and is ready to raise the level of the diplomatic mission in Moscow to an appropriate level, Prime Minister of Libya Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh said on Thursday at the talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"We hope that the Russian Foreign Ministry will decide on the return of the ambassador to Libya and on the resumption of the embassy's activities. For our part, we are also ready to raise the level of the diplomatic mission in Moscow to an ambassador," he said.

On October 2, 2013, the Russian embassy in Tripoli was attacked. The attackers managed to break into the territory of the diplomatic mission and then they were pushed out by Libyan army units. None of the Russians were injured in the attack. The Libyan authorities then acknowledged that they could not guarantee the safety of the diplomats, after which a decision was made to evacuate them. In 2020, Lavrov announced that Russia had decided to reopen the embassy.
