State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin and Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova at a meeting in Moscow signed an agreement on parliamentary cooperation, and also agreed to establish a high-level inter-parliamentary commission. This was reported on the Duma website on Monday.
"In the State Duma on Monday, February 13, Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin met with Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova. Vyacheslav Volodin and Sahiba Gafarova signed an agreement on cooperation between the State Duma and Milli Majlis, which is the first such agreement with the Azerbaijani parliament. It was also decided to establish a high-level inter-parliamentary commission," the statement said.
According to Volodin, deputies of the State Duma and the Milli Majlis need to work on legislative support for the decisions adopted at the level of the presidents, which the citizens of Russia and Azerbaijan are waiting for.
"For us it (the signing of the agreement - TASS) is not only a very important, but also a responsible step to build relations, because we are talking about the implementation of new formats, filling them with concrete content. And the agreement must solve this problem," Volodin said. He also called to more actively develop cooperation at the level of profile committees.
In turn, Gafarova noted growth of trade turnover, volume of Russian investments in Azerbaijani economy, and emphasized the special role of interaction between the two countries in cultural and humanitarian spheres. She reminded that not a single Russian school was closed in Azerbaijan. "There are 340 Russian schools and 27 universities in Azerbaijan teach in Russian. There is a very large number of Azerbaijani students in the Russian Federation. This is also an indicator of the relations that exist between our peoples, especially between our youth," she said.
Volodin paid an official visit to Baku on September 26, 2022, during which he met with Gafarova. Then the speaker of the State Duma invited his colleague on an official visit to Moscow.
