State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin told reporters that at a meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov he discussed the development of inter-parliamentary relations, including new formats for possible cooperation between the two states.
"Today we talked about the development of relations between our countries, and given the signed declaration on deepening strategic cooperation, which was approved, our heads of state signed it last year in June. It talks about the need to develop inter-parliamentary ties. In this regard, of course, it is important that we maintain the momentum that our presidents have taken within the framework of the parliamentary dimension. That was exactly what we talked about. We talked about new formats of possible cooperation to make them effective and useful," Volodin said on Monday after his meeting with the president of Turkmenistan.
According to the State Duma speaker, the relations between Russia and Turkmenistan are developing, and to a large extent their dynamics is set by the heads of the two countries. According to him, in this regard, it is important that the deputies do everything for the legislative support of the decisions made at the level of the heads of the countries and "make decisions and discuss issues for the benefit of" both states.
"Last year's visit to Russia and our meetings in the State Duma with the respected Arkadag [Chairman of the People's Council (Khalk Maslakhaty) of Turkmenistan, former President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov] provided the impetus for us to work in the parliamentary dimension today and to discuss issues of interparliamentary relations, because the conversation last year in Moscow became the basis for the current conversation here in Turkmenistan," he stressed.
Volodin leads the Duma delegation, which arrived in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat on Sunday. The delegation includes representatives of specialized committees. According to the press service of the lower house, this visit of the State Duma delegation headed by its chairman was the first in 11 years.
