Volodin Highlights Great Potential for Cooperation Between Russia and Libya

Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin highlighted the significant potential for cooperation between Russia and Libya across various sectors during a meeting with Chairman of the High Council of State Mohammed Tekala.

"Russia and Libya have significant potential for cooperation across various sectors," stated Volodin, as quoted by the parliamentary chamber's press service. He further noted that the trade turnover between the two countries is on the rise, with a 2.8-fold increase reported this year alone.

Volodin emphasized the longstanding nature of the relationship between Russia and Libya, stating, "We have always advocated for cooperation with Libya. Your visit will undoubtedly provide momentum for the development of our relations," noted the Duma speaker.

He specified that within the parliamentary dimension, efforts should be made to ensure that the dialogue occurs on a "permanent systemic basis," allowing relations to develop not only through the cooperation of friendship groups or one-off visits but also at the level of specialized committees and commissions. "Based on the principles of friendship, mutually beneficial cooperation, the absence of double standards, and non-interference in the sovereign affairs of independent states," Volodin added.

Tekala stated that his "visit to Russia contributes to the strengthening and development of friendship" between the countries. "We share common interests, and in line with these interests, we are enhancing our cooperation. I believe this will contribute to progress," he said. Tekala proposed establishing a contact group with the State Duma to coordinate the work of parliamentarians. "We are interested in all developments in your country. We believe that the parliament should exert some influence on the executive authorities and governments to adopt certain bills proposed by the State Duma and the High Council of State in our country."

Volodin reportedly endorsed Tekala's proposal, stating, "We need to explore new, more effective formats of cooperation. Despite the differences in views and programs among the five political factions in the State Duma, all are united in the opinion about the necessity of building relations with Libya and its parliament," Volodin concluded.
