State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin has extended his congratulations to Hammouda Sabbagh on his re-election as Speaker of the People's Council of Syria and has invited him to visit Russia.
"I congratulate you on your election as Speaker of the People's Council of the Syrian Arab Republic. I invite you to visit the Russian Federation. I will be glad to meet with you," Volodin said, as quoted on the State Duma website.
Volodin emphasized that the ongoing interaction between the State Duma and the People's Council plays a vital role in strengthening cooperation between Russia and Syria, which are celebrating the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.
According to the SANA news agency, Hammouda Sabbagh was re-elected as the head of the People's Council of Syria for the third time. His re-election occurred during the first session with the newly elected parliamentarians, who were sworn in on Thursday morning. In his address, Sabagh expressed gratitude to the MPs for their trust and called for "hard and serious work for the benefit of the Syrian people."
