Volodin: Russian and Iranian parliaments need to fix presidents' decisions by law

23 January 2023

Relations between Russia and Iran are developing dynamically on the basis of decisions taken by the presidents of both countries. The parliaments of Russia and Iran need to legislate them. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said this at a meeting with Chairman of Iran's Islamic Council Assembly Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Tehran on Monday.

"Relations between Russia and Iran are developing dynamically. The presidents of our countries set an example of how to develop relations and do everything for mutual understanding. For our part, we need to do everything in order to legally ensure the decisions reached at the highest level," Volodin stressed.

Furthermore, he added, the sides also need to develop their relations within the parliamentary framework. In particular, Volodin reminded that the State Duma and the Islamic Council Assembly of Iran have established a commission "to resolve issues in the framework of the parliamentary dimension," the third meeting of which is taking place in Tehran today. According to Volodin, the work of the commission will allow the parliamentarians "not only to better understand each other, but also to build work for the end result, making it more substantive," allowing them to solve the issues that citizens of both countries are waiting for.

"We initially decided that the commission would take place alternately in Russia and in Iran. And after the commission here in Tehran, we hope to see you together with your colleagues in Moscow," Volodin said.

The speaker of the State Duma is on an official visit to the Iranian capital. He arrived here at the head of the State Duma delegation on Sunday.
