The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on the world community to allocate $76 million to help residents of Lebanon affected by the explosion at the seaport of Beirut. The WHO is currently sending $1.7 million worth of protective equipment against the coronavirus to this country, the organization's Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a briefing in Geneva on Monday.

"We have appealed for $76 million and ask for solidarity and support for the Lebanese," he said. In turn, the WHO "sends personal protective equipment worth $ 1.7 million to support the fight against COVID-19 (coronavirus-caused disease-ed. TASS), " he said.

The head of the WHO recalled that after the August 4 explosion in the port of Beirut,  materials for surgical operations and treatment of injuries were immediately sent to Lebanon. "We have allocated funds from the emergency fund. Our staff, together with partners from Lebanon and other UN structures on the ground, are supporting the assessment of the aftermath of the explosion on the health sector," Ghebreyesus said. The organization works closely with the Lebanese health authorities.

On August 7, the WHO called on the world community to allocate $15 million to provide urgent health care to the population of Lebanon in connection with the severe consequences of the explosion in the capital.
