The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the restoration of Gaza's healthcare system as an extremely challenging task requiring "billions in investments."
“Supporting the recovery of the healthcare system will demand unwavering commitment from donors and the international community,” the WHO stated. The organization emphasized the complexity of the situation, citing the extensive scale of destruction, operational challenges, and existing constraints.
Currently, only half of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are partially operational, with nearly all facilities damaged or partially destroyed. Just 38% of primary healthcare centers remain functional. An estimated 30,000 injured individuals require ongoing rehabilitation, while specialized care is nearly inaccessible, and overseas medical evacuations face severe delays.
The WHO also highlighted a significant rise in the spread of infectious diseases and the looming threat of hunger in the enclave.
To address these urgent needs, the organization announced its readiness to scale up its response in partnership with other UN agencies. However, it stressed the importance of removing security-related obstacles and securing substantial funding to meet the pressing health demands.
