WHO Chief Urges Israel to Ensure Humanitarian Aid Reaches Northern Gaza

11 January

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called on Israeli authorities to allow organizations delivering humanitarian aid access to northern Gaza. He issued a statement to this effect on X (formerly Twitter).

"[We] face almost insurmountable challenges in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. We have materials, teams and plans, but we don't have access. We call on Israel to approve requests for WHO and other organizations to deliver humanitarian aid," Ghebreyesus pointed out.

The WHO chief also noted that the organization was forced to cancel six planned missions to northern Gaza due to Israel's rejection of requests to allow such trips and failure to provide safe passage to the north of the enclave.

The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated after the infiltration of Palestinian Hamas fighters from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. The movement members called the attack a response to the Israeli authorities' actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel has declared a complete blockade of Gaza and launched retaliatory strikes on the enclave and parts of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
