WHO explained a low coronavirus mortality rate in Russia

11 June 2020

In Russia, mortality statistics for coronavirus are "unusual" and "difficult to understand", the World Health Organization Program Director Michael Ryan said.

According to him, the low coronavirus mortality rate in Russia can be explained by the large coverage of testing.

In situations where a lot of people are checked, you can see "a relatively low death rate," Ryan said.

"But it will be important that Russia assess how COVID-19 death certification is conducted to make sure that it is done carefully and properly," he said.

Health system performance

Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov earlier in an interview with CNN denied assumptions about understated statistics on coronavirus in Russia.

Peskov was asked whether "manipulation" of data was possible since Russia records significantly fewer deaths than other countries.

"You didn't think about the possibility that Russia has a more efficient health care system and that there is an opportunity for more people to stay alive," he replied.

The epidemic  wanes

The death rate from a new type of coronavirus in Moscow is lower than in other cities of the world, the epidemic has declined, in June, the death rate for COVID-19 will be much lower, the mayor of the capital Sergey Sobyanin told reporters on Wednesday.

He clarified that the coronavirus as the main or concomitant cause of death was noted in 5,260 cases - 92% of all excess deaths in May. Of these, 2.7 thousand cases are deaths with the main cause COVID-19.

Mass testing

Rospotrebnadzor on Thursday reported that in the Khabarovsk Krai, Tyumen and St. Petersburg it is planned to conduct a study of population immunity to COVID-19  in June.

The study is necessary to make a forecast of the development of the epidemiological situation in certain regions and in the country as a whole. In addition, the results of testing will help to identify the features of the epidemic process and help in planning activities for specific and non-specific prevention of COVID-19.

Coronavirus pandemic

In late December 2019, Chinese authorities reported an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown origin in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province. Experts have previously determined that the causative agent of the disease was a new type of coronavirus — 2019-nCoV (later named SARS-CoV-2).

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, which by that time had affected 118,000 people in 114 countries.
