WHO told about the situation with COVID-19 in Syria

26 June 2020

The number of COVID-19 infected people in Syria is low, but there is a danger of a sharp increase in new cases in the near future, said Richard Brennan, Director of the World Health Organization in the Eastern Mediterranean region, at a briefing of the Association of foreign correspondents at the UN office in Geneva.

"There are only 248 cases in the country at the moment. But we are not sure about this. In other countries in the region, the number of cases grew slowly at first, and then sharply increased. We have seen this in Iraq, Turkey, and Egypt. And we fully expect that we will have a similar problem in Syria, " he said.

According to him, it is still possible to prevent a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in Syria, including by helping the authorities to conduct tests and track contacts of patients.
