Yemen's Ambassador Calls for Diplomatic Support in Advancing Peace Between Palestine and Israel

30 November 2023

Yemeni Ambassador to Russia Ahmed Salem Al-Wahishi expressed the belief that the peace process between Palestine and Israel should be given a chance, according to a statement made to TASS.

"It is necessary to create an opportunity for a peace process in which international legitimacy is realized, including the establishment of a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank with East Jerusalem as its capital. This should be based on a two-state solution, allowing both to coexist next to each other in security and peace," the diplomat said.

The ambassador highlighted that Yemen took part in the recent Arab-Islamic summit held in Saudi Arabia on November 11. During the summit, Yemen conveyed the collective stance of all Islamic and Arab nations in favor of securing a ceasefire in Gaza. This position aligned with the view of the Islamic majority in the UN General Assembly, where a resolution was adopted urging a ceasefire and an end to the hostilities in the region, Salem Al-Wahishi emphasized.

He also reminded that the summit included a committee comprising foreign ministers from Arab nations like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, along with representatives from Asian countries such as Indonesia and African nations. "This ministerial group recently visited Moscow, holding discussions with [Russian Foreign Minister Sergey] Lavrov," - he continued. - "They also visited other countries that are permanent members of the UN Security Council, advocating for a ceasefire. Their aim was to facilitate the inflow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, addressing needs such as food, energy, water, and addressing the issue of detainees in both Gaza and Israeli jails."

On November 22, the Palestinian movement Hamas reported reaching an agreement with Israel, brokered by Egypt and Qatar, on a four-day humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip, which went into effect on November 24. The agreements called for the release of children, teenagers (under 19 years of age), and women held in the enclave in exchange for the release of children, teenagers (under 19 years of age), and women from Israeli prisons. On November 27, the parties agreed to extend the truce for two more days under the same conditions, meaning that three Palestinian prisoners would be released daily in exchange for every Israeli hostage released. The Israel Defense Forces announced the extension of the truce in the Gaza Strip less than 20 minutes before the latest ceasefire expired.
